This row of cottages on Bearton Road were built around 1900 by Foster and Co. Bearton Road takes it’s name from the Hamlet of Bearton which formerly existed in the area, outside of mediaeval Hitchin. Plans for the development of the Lovell Estate including a new road called “York Road” were passed in Summer of 1896. It was bounded by Dukes Lane, Ickleford Road, York Road and Bearton Road. The landowner was Mr Frederick Francis Lovell of Hinchelsea, Brockenhurst, Hampshire, who had many other parcels of land elsewhere in Hitchin and St Ippollitts.
