Newtons Way was constructed in the late 1960s to serve the fire station and fireman’s houses some of the houses were allocated to members of the police force. The road is named after Isaac Newton, the superintendent of the Hitchin Fire Brigade from 1815 until 1850. It was his father Robert who as people’s churchwarden, had persuaded the vestry in 1814 to replace the old firefighting equipment with a horse-drawn manual pump operated by ten men. As a result of his action the Hitchin firefighting establishment came into being.
From the end of Newtons Way there are a number of pathways one leading to the top of Kershaws Hill which takes you straight down into the town centre, or you can turn left onto Standhill Road or right out onto Hollow Lane.
